I don't know much about Charles Groves but he is more than equal to the task with the forces of his Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra well in hand. The sound is sumptuous and grand! The music is, as well. Sir Charles Groves is not exactly a household name in the United States, unless we're talking about a household that collected EMI LPs during the 1960s and 70s. But Groves was a fine musician. He had a broad repertory (he was excellent in Sibelius, for example), but he was best known for his championship of British composers. There isn't a performance in this collection which is less than good, and many are superlative.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society is a British society based in Liverpool, England, that manages a professional symphony orchestra, a concert venue, and extensive programmes of learning through music. The society is the second oldest of its type in the United Kingdom. Its orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, is the country's longest-surviving professional orchestra. The RLPO is the UK's only orchestra that has its own hall.
Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto was first recorded complete in 1929. Truncated versions had been recorded in 1916 using the acoustic recording process, the technical limitations of which necessitated drastic rearrangement of the score. Electrical recording, introduced in the 1920s, gave a greatly improved dynamic range and realism, and the two leading English record companies, Columbia and His Master's Voice (HMV) both made recordings of the concerto that remain in the catalogue
Sir Edward Elgar's Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61, is one of his longest orchestral works and has been described as 'the greatest English contribution to the treasury of Romantic violin concertos'. The Royal Philharmonic Society of London commissioned the concerto in 1909, when Elgar was at the height of his fame. It is dedicated to the Austrian virtuoso Fritz Kreisler who was the soloist at the first performance which took place on 10 November 1910.
