As pianist in Ronnie Scott’s house band, Critchinson acted as unobtrusive foil to many a visiting soloist. His solo session turns out to be equally unassuming, a collection of standards given the most delicate of improvisational twists. Dinner jazz? Well, yes, although the pianist’s full tone and his eye for a neglected melody are a definite asset. Lullaby of the Leaves is just one of the tunes worthy of resurrection, while Gershwin is represented by the lesser-known Isn ’t It a Pity and He Loves and She Loves.
