For Joe Beck by Donald W. Mohr and Josh Peters, released 01 December 2017 1. The Schnitzel 2. Grindin' On Melrose 3. The Internet's Back 4. Struttin' Down An Uneven Sidewalk 5. It's Gonna Be A Good Day After All 6. The Beginnings Of An Idea 7. John Henry On Autopilot I was nineteen when I met Joe Beck. He was playing a concert at a small music school in Briarcliff Manor, New York, where I was preparing for my time at Berklee College of Music. My exposure to jazz was limited to the mainstream household names, including Miles Davis, and here’s Joe Beck, who was the guitarist.
Beck was hailed for his funky fusion work, both as an individual and in combination with saxophonist David Sanborn, he was an ace studio musician, working with everybody from Miles Davis to Paul Simon to Gloria Gaynor, and he was a brilliant and daring interpreter of standards. It's that last aspect of his playing that shines brightly on this posthumously released live date. If this is truly Beck's final recording, it's a great way to cap a recording career. This album was recorded in 2006, two years before lung cancer took his life, and it's a shame that it took this long.
