Mascagni never again achieved the fame that came his way with Cavalleria Rusticana, that nasty little piece of verismo composing that helped set the tone for a whole movement in opera. But his lesser-known L'Amico Fritz, best called a bucolic romance, is a wonderful, lyrical work with a lot to offer. When this was recorded in 1968, both Pavarotti and Freni were 33 years old and at the start of their international careers. Both are in perfect voice; fresh, bright-sounding, involved, fearless at all registers and dynamic levels.

Beppe enters and attempts to cheer him up with a song, but Fritz becomes even more depressed. David arrives and tells Fritz that Suzel is engaged to a fine young man and her father will soon ask for Fritz’s blessing. Enraged, Fritz says that he will refuse and leaves. Suzel enters sadly but David insists that everything will be all right. He leaves her alone and she voices her despair and love for Fritz.
