La Fille mal gardée was a resounding success on its premiere in 1960 and has remained a firm favourite in The Royal Ballet’s repertory. The ballet displays some of Ashton’s most virtuoso choreography, most strikingly in the series of energetic pas de deux that express the youthful passion of Lise and Colas. The ballet is also laced with exuberant good humour, in a whirl of dancing chickens, grouchy guardians and one very unwilling suitor. Hans and Julia Rausing and The Royal Opera House Endowment Fund. The performance lasts about 2 hours 25 minutes, including one interval.

Artists: Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, John Lanchbery. National Philharmonic Orchestra, Richard Bonynge. When Sir Frederick Ashton decided to stage a completely new version of "La Fille Mal Gardée" for the Royal Ballet in 1959, he seriously considered utilizing the 1864 score of Hertel, though in Lanchbery's adaptation. Both Ashton and Lanchbery found Hertel's score to be entirely to heavy-handed for their production, and decided to dig deeper into the ballet's musical past

The ballet, first choreographed by Jean Dauberval in 1789, had a score made up of folk songs and popular songs, but for a revival in 1828 Ferdinand Hérold cobbled together a new score out of some of the original numbers, pre-existing compositions, particularly popular selections from Rossini operas, and some of his own material. Humor in music has always been a tricky business, and more often than not, when music is considered humorous, it is because of a humorous text or dramatic situation, and not a quality inherent in the music.
