The term "disco" has been appropriated by so many dance music subgenres - sometimes with irony, sometimes without - that it's sometimes easy to forget that it once referred to a truly distinctive and recognizable style of dance music

As Lagos music journalist Dean Disi notes in the liners: "There was a diametric difference in the music of the discos and the music played by the groups. Disco music as played by the DJs was essentially western. The young Nigerian groups were hooked on it and tried to play it but with a distinctive African stamp of their ow. So titles like "Boogie Trip" and "Boogie Train" are to be expected.

Surprisingly familiar, yet intriguingly unknown, these tracks sound just as fresh today as they did 30 or more years ago. 12 tracks rife with horns, moog and bells and whistles to keep you up all night.

Enough about the back story! Interesting, but I think this release needs to get the praise it seriously deserves. Top-shelf Nigerian soul, funk and disco form the 1970s on display here. Tracking down each of these tracks on your own would take a LOT of time and money. There is not a single dud on this compilation. Not a single filler track! Some serious dance floor burners on here, and a few laid back cuts too. Secondary to the music but also important is the context: recently independent Nigeria in the global Black is Beautiful era....WOW

The inclusion of the Doris Ebong track "Boogie Trip" on the CD version of the Kon & Amir Off Track Vol. III compilation triggered an accusation of bootlegging against BBE by Frank Gossner who claims he included it in his compilation Lagos Disco Inferno after obtaining exclusive licensing rights from Tony Essien, the producer and co-author of the track. http://www.soulstrut.com/index.php/forums/viewthread/64091/

Thanks for the link, Yemsky. Still a good laugh. Now, several years later, I've just released a whole series of follow-up 12"s while BBE have retired their Off-Track compilations and everybody involved is still laughing about their bogus "contract" with this Digger Elias scam artist.
