Quadraphonic (or Quadrophonic and sometimes Quadrasonic) sound – equivalent to what is now called . surround sound – uses four channels in which speakers are positioned at the four corners of the listening space, reproducing signals that are (wholly or in part) independent of one another. Quadraphonic audio was the earliest consumer product in surround sound and thousands of quadraphonic recordings were made during the 1970s.

An Introduction To The World Of SQ Quadraphonic by DorenesXXOO. Surround sound/quadraphonic (old n new). The Azimuth Co-ordinator was a joystick device for controlling a quadraphonic sound system. By swivelling the stick, the sound output could be shifted from one speaker bank to another; with the joystick in the central position, the sound output would be equal in all speakers.
When a music fan thinks of the "Quadraphonic Sound" of the 1970's, and even today's modern . sound options, one of the first music titles that come to mind is Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" album. Released in 1973, this album combined thematic music with a myriad of sound effects and spoken passages that has entertained listeners for the past 30+ years. Many have spent hours listening with headphones, while others listened as stereos and boom boxes played their LPs, cassettes, and 8 tracks. When the CD format arrived, this was one of the first titles. EMI owned the rights to all Pink Floyd material throughout the world, with the exception of the United States.
Quadraphonic (or Quadrophonic & sometimes Quadrasonic) sound – the most widely used early term for what is now called . Quadraphonic audio was the earliest consumer offering in surround sound. The sound separation of the SQ system was greatly improved by the introduction of SQ Full Logic decoding, in 1975. Columbia/CBS Records had a catalogue of four channel records called QUADRAPHONIC with a golden frame on the album covers. These records were encoded with the SQ system. It was a commercial failure due to many technical problems and format incompatibilities. The first medium for 4-channel sound was the quadraphonic reel-to-reel tape, introduced to the American market by the Vanguard Recording Society in June 1969. RCA Records followed, in April 1970, with its announcement of Quad-8 or Quadraphonic 8-Track Tape (later shortened to just Q8). These eventually appeared in Sept.
Before the Quadraphonic remix box-set Boxed, which contained the quad version of Tubular Bells that most are familiar with nowadays, Virgin released a stand-alone Quad version that was an up-mix from the standard stereo mix, although there was an additional added at the end of side two, a short recording of a model plane being flown in the studio. This is the only true quadraphonic track on the album. It is what it is. Mike Oldfield – Exposed. And from Mr Oldfield’s first quad album to his last.
