Caifanes’ debut album Caifanes (also known as Mátenme Porque Me Muero, Volumen I) was released in August 1988 by RCA-Ariola. The immediate sale of 300,000 copies of the EP cemented the band's appeal. Recorded in Wisconsin and produced by Adrian Belew, of King Crimson fame, El Silencio further had a more direct guitar driven sound. No Dejes Que (Don't Let It ), Estas Dormida (You're Sleeping), Debajo de Tu Piel (Under Your Skin), and the soaring Nubes (Clouds) would go on to become Mexican rock staples. The influence of Belew, who also played guitar on the album, was felt strongest in Hasta Morir (Until Death), Tortuga (Turtle), and Vamos a Hacer un Silencio (Let's Make a Silence).

El Silencio is an album with hard rock songs like Nos Vamos Juntos and No Dejes Que; fun songs like Nubes y Para Que No Digas Que No Pienso en Ti; mysterious songs like Miercoles de Cenizas and songs, like Vamos a Hacer un Silencio, full of spirituality. This last song is one of the best in Caifanes' career and highly recommended because it perfectly captures the poetry, philosophy and musical talent behind this great band. El Silencio is probably the highest point in the life of this band. You will enjoy this album even if your Spanish is not very fluent.

Having Adrian Belew produce a Caifanes album must have seemed like a great idea, since the Mexican band had a musical attack as accomplished and eclectic as Belew's own work. Unfortunately, the pairing just doesn't strike sparks here. Belew's influence shows up throughout the album, which has more jittery rhythms and odd dissonances than other albums by the band. This works fine on a few cuts, such as the lively "Nubes," but over the course of the album it is a distraction. That sense of musical clutter may also be due to the attempted expansion of the band - Caifanes picked up two new members on this. El Silencio is worth having for the half of the CD when things come together, but it is not the best from Caifanes.
