Charlotte Lois Zelka (also Zelkowitz) (April 3, 1930 - October 6, 2001) was a concert pianist and founder of the Pasadena Music Ensemble. She began playing the piano at age three. In her teens she went to New York to study at the Juilliard School of Music and later with Artur Schnabel. When in her twenties she moved to Europe to tour the continent for two decades. She made several recordings for Vox during the 1950s. Included in her repertoire was Ernst Krenek's 5th piano sonata, which she commissioned. In 1957 she married philosopher and journalist Günther Anders.

Ernst Krenek, originally Ernst Křenek (August 23, 1900 – December 22, 1991) was an Austrian-born composer of Czech ancestry; throughout his life he insisted that his name be written Krenek rather than Křenek, and that it should be pronounced as a German word. He explored atonality and other modern styles and wrote a number of books, including Music Here and Now (1939), a study of Johannes Ockeghem (1953), and Horizons Circled: Reflections on my Music (1974).
In the 1920s, Ernst Krenek criticized a certain unnamed brand of contemporary music (presumably Schoenberg and his disciples) as "the self-gratification of an individual who sits in his studio and invents rules according to which he then writes down his notes". Schoenberg took offense at this remark and answered that Krenek "wishes for only whores as listeners" (Ross 2007, 156).
Krenek, Ernst (b Vienna, 23 Aug 1900; d Palm Springs, CA, 22 Dec 1991). Austrian composer and writer, also active in Germany and the USA. One of the most prolific composers of the 20th century, he wrote in a wide variety of contemporary idioms. In 1942 Krenek accepted a position at Hamline University, St Paul, Minnesota, where he taught until 1947. His close friendship with Mitropoulos and Krasner led to the foundation of the Minneapolis chapter of ISCM. Compositions from the Hamline years include Cantata for Wartime (1943), the Seventh String Quartet (1943–4), Santa Fe Timetable (1945), the chamber opera What Price Confidence? (1945), Symphonic Elegy (1946), dedicated to the memory of Webern, and the Fourth Symphony (1947).
