The Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44, by Robert Schumann was composed in 1842 and received its first public performance the following year. Noted for its "extroverted, exuberant" character, Schumann's piano quintet is considered one of his finest compositions and a major work of nineteenth-century chamber music. Composed for piano and string quartet, the work revolutionized the instrumentation and musical character of the piano quintet and established it as a quintessentially Romantic genre.

Piano Quintet in E-flat major, O. 4. Quintett Es-Dur op. 44; Kvinteto E♭-maĵora op. 44; Quintette pour piano de Schumann; חמישיית הפסנתר של שומאן; ピアノ五重奏曲; Pianokwintet. Opus/Catalogue NumberOp.

Rudolf Serkin – piano Budapest String Quartet. Philadelphia Orchestra Eugene Ormandy – conductor (CBS Masterworks – Great Performances 38). Over the course of his long and illustrious career, Rudolf Serkin came to occupy a niche as an Apollonian interpreter of the music of the First Viennese School, particularly Beethoven. His crisp phrasing and lean tone seemed the epitome of a lofty classical approach, as distinct from the glowing intensity of Horowitz, or the lushness of Arrau. As with most such generalizations, it was an unfairly limiting characterization.

Ormandy gets a deft performance from the Philadelphia Orchestra, with just the right touch of plushness that the "Philadelphia Sound" was famous for. The combination is well nigh unbeatable in terms of realizing the many moods of the piece. This was late in the career of the Budapest String Quartet. This teaming with Serkin seems to have summoned from the Quartet the powers of years past. Serkin leads a taut performance and the Quartet responds with fine focus.

Schumann: Piano Concerto; Piano Quintet. Rudolf Serkin or the Budapest Quartet, which might more accurately be described that way - still, no listener could deny that Schumann's Piano Concerto and Piano Quintet are, if not the greatest works of classical music, still among the best works in their genres composed in the mid-nineteenth century by a German
