Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 1, Piano Sonata No. 26 - Les Adieux, Opp. 15, 81a. Ludwig van Beethoven. Serkin had also recorded both in the early fifties with /Sony. Both were quicker and leaner than these remakes, but I find the first Ormandy fourth too quick,especially the first movement. The newer version does more justice to the lyrical, more contemplative aspects of the concerto. And since Serkin possessed inner tension/energy at any tempo, quick could sound too quick.

The series features conductors Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, Bruno Walter and George Szell with the NY Phil, Cleveland Orch, Philadelphia Orch, and many soloists such as Rudolph Serkin. Just a great series, each with a small booklet with information about the works and composers, a nice touch that seems to be lacking in some newer budget lines. One correction that I would make to the list is for Number 76. In the Great Performances series, this is actually the Schumann Symphony No. 1 Spring & No. 4, with the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by George Szell. I’ve found this one on CD and cassette, but it’s one of the two in the set that I’m missing on LP (the other is No. 100, the Prokofiev, Kodaly pairing).

Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 26 in E♭ major, Op. 81a, known as the Les Adieux sonata, was written during the years 1809 and 1810. The title Les Adieux implies a programmatic nature. The French attack on Vienna, led by Napoléon Bonaparte in 1809, forced Beethoven's patron, Archduke Rudolph, to leave the city. Yet, there is some uncertainty about this nature of the piece - or at least, about the degree to which Beethoven wished this programmatic nature would be known.
