The Who by Numbers is the seventh studio album by English rock band the Who, released on 3 October 1975 in the United Kingdom through Polydor Records, and on 25 October 1975 in the United States by MCA Records. It was named the tenth-best album of the year in The Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics poll. Pete Townshend has claimed that the band recorded practically every song he had written for The Who by Numbers, partially due to a writer's block that he was experiencing at the time

While The Who by Numbers pretends to be a series of ten unconnected songs, it’s really only a pose; there’s not a story line here, but there are more important unities - lyrical themes, musical and production style, a sense of time and place. Quadrophenia and Tommy helped Peter Townshend sharpen a writing style that was already one of the most personal and interesting in rock. Not that the record is witless; no Who album has ever been. Squeeze Box, for instance, is the Who’s ultimate sex joke, even better than Pictures of Lily in its way. Its sound, complete with a banjo break that sounds as if the Who is ready to refight the Civil War with the Band, is a real departure, close to jolly rockabilly.

The Who by Numbers functions as Pete Townshend's confessional singer/songwriter album, as he chronicles his problems with alcohol ("However Much I Booze"), women ("Dreaming From the Waist" and "They Are All in Love"), and life in general

this is a much better release out of japan from 2011 for this title, this has the japan only shm mastering and also includes a replica of the original japan obi from 1975 and also has bonus tracks, if you want to spend less get the 1999 version but THIS ONE is much nicer and sounds much better.............

These releases that came out in 2011 are not only SHM but DSD remastered. That's one of the reasons these releases sound sooooo good. The boxset has 11 releases starting with UICY-94775 (Odds and Sods) and ends with UICY-94788/9 (The BBC Sessions). I received these from a friend whom I went to college with that still lives in Tokyo. He moved to Japan in 2000 or so and went to work for IBM then, but now is working for some start up that is doing pretty good. He got married over there to a Japanese woman who is just as ambitious as he is and she opened a shop that sells Blu-Ray movies, vinyl and CDs. It's really convenient as I can get him to locate certain Lps and CDs that I'm wanting. He has planned to move back to the states, but I hope he waits a few more years. That sounds selfish, but he has been a great way for me to get a ton of promo sets and mint like used vinyl Lps.I have managed to get a lot of great sounding High Resolution music from them as well as some very rare and nearly impossible to find items. I have about 60 promo box sets now and close to 100 SACD releases as well. I also have a few 5.1 DVD-A DTS surround sound disc that he has sent to me and these sound really great. Honestly I have not been real impressed with the Blu-Ray releases that I have received mostly made by "Pure Audio", but I have a Tom Petty Cardboard packaged Blu-Ray release that's in a long type cardboard cover, not the mini cover, that sounds extremely great. It's "Damn The Torpedoes" and it's actually an American release. The version in the standard plastic Blu-Ray box doesn't sound the same for some reason, but the cardboard release is just like having Tom Petty in your living room. The vocals come out the center channel perfectly and the music isn't all over the place like some SACDs I own. It's one of the best sounding multichannel disc I own. I play my SACDs and other multichannel disc in our main living room or den usually when I'm home by myself. My other Japanese CDs and Lps I play on a high end two channel system with a dual sub set up. It's in what I call my "listening room". My better half has different musical taste than I do, so I also have a small networked Marantz DAC CD player that does 24bit/192kHz disc and downloads as well as some of the DSD downloads. These sound great through my Byerdynamic Headphones and my Shure SE846 earbuds. I prefer the Byerdynamic headphones as they are balanced and sound much better, but you can hear them in the room as well. But these 2011 Who disc are incredible sounding compared to any of the other issues of these titles I happen to own. You are most certainly right that they are far superior to the earlier "Bullseye" releases that preceded these. They are often referred to this because the OBI's have a bullseye symbol on the back of the release.
