An orchestra pit is the area in a theater (usually located in a lowered area in front of the stage) in which musicians perform. Orchestral pits are utilized in forms of theatre that require music (such as opera and ballet) or in cases when incidental music is required. The conductor is typically positioned at the front of the orchestral pit facing the stage.

He was given the Evening Standard Actor of the Year award for his in Macbeth. Why is that? Where do the orchestra sit in the theatre? When you go to the theatre, what do you do during the interval between the acts of the play? Ex. 5 Read the text and explain the meaning of the words in bold type.
Orchestras play a wide range of repertoire, including symphonies, opera and ballet overtures, concertos for solo instruments, and as pit ensembles for operas, ballets, and some types of musical theatre (. Gilbert and Sullivan operettas). Amateur orchestras include those made up of students from an elementary school or a high school, youth orchestras, and community orchestras; the latter two typically being made up of amateur musicians from a particular city or region. The invention of the piston and rotary valve by Heinrich Stölzel and Friedrich Blühmel, both Silesians, in 1815, was the first in a series of innovations which impacted the orchestra, including the development of modern keywork for the flute by Theobald Boehm and the innovations of Adolphe Sax in the woodwinds, notably the invention of the saxophone.
Typically, pit orchestras play in a lowered area in front of the stage called an orchestra pit. Inside the pit, the conductor stands facing towards the stage with his or her back towards the audience to coordinate the music with the vocals and actions of the singers, dancers and actors, while the orchestra sits facing the conductor. The conductor may also sit at one or more keyboards and conduct as well as play, which often means the use of more head and facial gestures rather than hand gestures. Musicians who play in pit orchestras are not only required to play multiple instruments at times, but they must also be familiar and able to play in multiple keys, styles, and tempos and make a switch instantaneously. The orchestration for a musical is written in a key best suited to range of the singer.
A theatre is a building where plays, operas or ballets are performed. It has a stage for the actors and an auditorium for the audience. Thus the auditorium is the part of a theatre where the audience sits. The stage is raised several feet above the floor of the auditorium. At the sides of the stage are wings. The curtain separates the stage from the auditorium. The curtain is dropped or lowered between the scenes or acts of a play(an opera). Each person in a large audience can see the actors on the stage without discomfort as the back part of the auditorium is several feet higher than the front part, so that the seats are on a slope. Above the ground floor there are generally several curved balconies with even steeper slopes of seats. Seats in the stalls are those near the stage on the ground floor. Seats in the first rows of the stalls are called orchestra stalls. Seats behind the stalls are known as the pit.
Theatre or theater is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers, typically actors or actresses, to present the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience in a specific place, often a stage. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through combinations of gesture, speech, song, music, and dance.
