Some five years later - perhaps inspired by his wife's piano trio or the highly successful Mendelssohn D minor Piano Trio - Schumann himself turned to the genre. In the space of only a few months, he produced his D minor and F major trios, two works that greatly contrast with one another. The D minor Trio is especially dismal and dark, particularly in its tragic third movement; meanwhile, the F major Trio is markedly upbeat, optimistic, and filled with playfulness.

The first two piano trios were written in 1847, five years after Schumann had completed his piano quintet and the piano quartet op. 47. These two works can therefore be viewed as works of his maturity. The first trio has a more serious nature than the second but this is only a matter of relativity as both are completely enjoyable and expertly written. In 2000 the Trio received the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for chamber music. I mention all this simply to inform those who are not familiar with this group of their recognised excellence in everything they have done.

The Florestan Trio is one of the most-recorded piano trios in the world. Their Schumann disc won a 1999 Gramophone Award; their CD of French piano trios is one of Hyperion’s best-sellers in the chamber music field, and all their other discs from Mozart to Saint-Saëns have become benchmark recordings

Trio in B major for Piano, Violin and Cello, op. 8: Allegro con brio. 3. The Florestan Trio. Trio in C major for Piano, Violin and Cello, op. 87: Allegro. 4. 87: Andante con moto. 5. Trio in C minor for Piano, Violin and Cello, op. 101: Andante grazioso.

The Florestan Trio takes its name from Schumann's name for himself in positive and carefree mood. His name for his introspective self was Eusebius. The music is among Dvořák's most celebrated – his two most popular, but very different, piano trios. The two piano trios Opp 21 and 26, composed in 1875 and 1876 respectively, show Dvorák’s deliberate move towards a much simpler musical style after the experiment of his early years. Op 21 in particular provides clear evidence that the melodic style which dominated his later compositions had already crystallized in this period.
