Cold Blood is a long-standing R&B horn funk band founded by Larry Field in 1968 and was originally based in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The band has also performed and recorded under the name Lydia Pense and Cold Blood, due to the popularity of their lead singer, Lydia Pense. The band first came to prominence in 1969 when rock impresario Bill Graham signed them after an audition and they played the Fillmore West in San Francisco
Cold Blood’s Lydia Pense delivered one of the most powerful, intensely soulful voices of the 1960s San Francisco rock scene. Now in her 60s, she sounds just as dynamic. Bill Graham came down to their drummer’s house to hear them. That was, like, ’66. I’d just graduated from high school. So you can do the math, Pense says, laughing. Graham came over and he liked the band. He took me aside and said, ‘You know, you ought to be off on your ow. I just took it with a grain of salt. I always liked the band. Pense’s bands played venues like The Fillmore, Winterland and The Carousel. Then came the group known originally as The Invaders, then The New Invaders, The Generation and, finally, Cold Blood. It was really something different, because we had, like, four.
A slight improvement over Lydia from two years earlier, this album suffers from uneven material. Since the highlights are by outsiders - "Drink the Wine" by Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, and "Blinded By Love" by Allen Toussaint - the fault clearly lies with the band's own material. It's too bad, because singer Lydia Pense still sounds great seven years after the band's debut album, and Cold Blood has rarely sounded as comfortable with its preferred white funk sound. The Al Kooper -penned "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know" gives.
