Ralph Baney, Jr. (born June 3, 1973), better known by the name Zak Baney, is a record producer, songwriter, screenwriter, filmmaker and photographer. He is known for originating a genre of techno music called acid breaks in 1987, which combined elements of Chicago's acid sound with South Florida's breakbeat style. Also was at the forefront of the Miami bass scene, making low bass frequency recordings for car bass competitions.

Combining Chicago's acid sound with Florida's breakbeat, it was a completely different sound. It was not his original intention to invent a new style of music - he simply just wanted something different at that time. Not knowing he would be sought after and put in the spot light, Zak Baney used many aliases and put out a string of white labels, not caring to make money or fame, he was strictly in it for the love of the music. He then started his own labels called Dubtone Records and Locked Groove Records.

A locked groove simply never advances; the groove changes from the spiral it was on the way in to a closed circle. Many of us have experienced the heartbreak of a home-made locked groove, . a "broken record," that repeats a phrase ad infinitum until one gets off the couch and picks up the tone arm and manually advances the needle. Along the way, someone figured out that the "runout groove" was arable land waiting to be seized. I think that the recorded locked groove came, at some point, to represent the medium itself, a synechdoche for the phenomenon of vinyl recordings; one need only hear the reference to this experience on the Monty Python track which ends with the loop, "Sorry Squire, I scratched the record.
