Duty Now for the Future is the second studio album by the American new wave band Devo. It was originally released in July 1979, on the labels Warner Bros. The majority of the songs on the album had been performed in Devo's live set as early as 1976.

Complete your Devo collection. From the opening monotone drone of 'Devo Corporate Anthem' thru to 'Red-eye express' this is a very solid and at times comical album. The highlights here are Smart Patrol /Mr. DNA, 'Swelling Itching Brain'and 'Blockhead' that are rife with typical devo-izms, drug references, and anti-establishment thinking. Pink Pussycat' with its 'meow meow meow' chorus still gives me a laugh. Devo were and still are eons ahead of their time and are perhaps one of the bravest bands ever.

More importantly, the album foregrounds Devo themselves, with Devo Corporate Anthem and Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA consolidating their message of de-evolution as well as the mythology surrounding the group (as robotic prophets sent to observe the human race and pave the way for a Mr. Kamikaze ). Duty Now for the Future Q&A.

While the most obvious flaw of Devo's Duty Now for the Future is that the material simply isn't as good as on their debut, their second album also captures the group in the midst of a significant stylistic shift.

It was on the Billboard charts for 10 weeks, peaking at Track listing: ---- A1. "Devo Corporate Anthem" (Mark Mothersbaugh) 1:16 A2. "Clockout" (Gerald V. Casale) 2:48 A3. "Timing X" (M. Mothersbaugh) 1:13 A4. "Wiggly World" (Bob Mothersbaugh, .

What Devo, like most No Wavers, apparently doesn’t understand is that inspired amateurism works only when the players aspire to something better: both Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols and the more anonymous guitar genius of Count Five’s Psychotic Reaction were audibly straining against their limitations as musicians. Devo celebrates those limitations and leaves us stuck with them, which is aggravating. If these characters are so smart, how come they can’t establish a groove? Because they aren’t that smart. To say that this critic despises Devo does not go nearly far enough. When I finish typing this, I’m taking a hammer to Duty Now for the Future, lest it corrupt anyone dumb or innocent enough to take it seriously. Shards sent on request. In This Article: Devo. Duty Now for the Future.

Duty Now For The Future. I had this album on vinyl back in the late 1980s, then recorded it on cassette so I could listen to it in my car. I haven't heard it in about 20 years, yet when I spun it over the last couple of days it sounded as fresh as ever!! A perfect second effort by DEVO coming betweeen the seminal Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo! and Freedom of Choice, their masterpiece third album.
