Where the soundtrack to Rushmore captured that film's mix of brash and bittersweet through British Invasion obscurities and Mark Mothersbaugh's playfully poignant score, the music for The Royal Tenenbaums - Wes Anderson's tale of a prodigal patriarch and the brood of child geniuses he left behind - evokes the film's shabbily genteel New York through vintage. Nearly as clever and nuanced as the film itself, The Royal Tenenbaums is also a moving, well-rounded album in its own right.

The Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack from 2001, composed by Various Artists, Mark Mothersbaugh. Released by Hollywood Records in 2001 (2061-62347-2) containing music from The Royal Tenenbaums (2001). The soundtrack, which has both original music by Mark Mothersbaugh, as well as older pieces by The Clash, Nick Drake, The Velvet Undergound, Nico, and others, is certainly fun and whimsical. Early on, the Tenenbaums seem to have a charmed existence, and the score does an extremely good job of setting up an ironic, fairy-tale atmosphere. Where the score gives an old-school feel to the film, the rock songs by The Clash and others give a nice jolt to certain scenes. Anderson knows his Generation X audience, and these pieces, though often from a previous generation, keep this audience in the loop.

Don't you just hate it when film credits are too small to read (will Hollywood ever change its conventions and help music fans out by showing the songs one by one and in big type, with a clear distinction between composers and performers) ànd when you end up with a soundtrack album that doesn't bother either? Because, by way of a review, I found the sources & credits info in this release severely disappointing. And so I looked up what the original sources & dates were for the music that wasn't specially composed for this movie by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh. The cd booklet doesn't mention the orginal recording or release dates, or the album on which the track first appeared. But it does say this: "This movie was my third experience with the composer Mark Mothersbaugh (...) Bob Casale, one of Mark's Devo colleagues, engineers the recording sessions (...) the operation is known as Mutato Muzika, which is I think Esperanto (...)" -- Wes AndersonTrack 02: 1967, from Nico (3) - Chelsea GirlTrack 03: 1991, from Debussy* / Ravel* / Quatuor Ysaÿe - String Quartets ; the original release is by Quatuor Ysaÿe but the soundtrack turned it into Ysaÿe Quartet (sigh).Track 04: 1972, from Paul Simon - Paul SimonTrack 06: 1970, from Bob Dylan - Self PortraitTrack 08: 1970, from John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band* - John Lennon / Plastic Ono BandTrack 09: 1970, from Emitt Rhodes - Emitt RhodesTrack 11: 1977, from The Clash - The ClashTrack 13: 1976, from Ramones - RamonesTrack 15: 1995, from Elliott Smith - Elliott SmithTrack 16: 1970, from Nick Drake - Bryter LayterTrack 18: 1965, from Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown ChristmasTrack 19: 1968, from The Velvet Underground - VUTrack 22: 1967, from Nico (3) - Chelsea Girl

Maybe next year for the 15th anniversary. I would love to see a RSD release on pink vinyl.
