In a recent interview, Kemble said that he and Ryzuk first had the idea to pay tribute to the comedy legend about 35 years ago, around the time of Durante’s death in 1980 at age 86. I always said, ‘That’s a character that should be brought back,’ and people don’t really realize that era in entertainment that much, the New Jersey-based performer said. Later in the ‘70s, he gravitated to jazz and fronted the vocalese trio Za Zu Zaz reminiscent of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross or Manhattan Transfer. The group traveled up and down East Coast with its eclectic mix of jazz, swing and novelty pop tunes, opening for Count Basie and playing at Newport Jazz Festival and New York City’s The Bottom Line and The Other End.
