The Who Sell Out is the third studio album by the British rock band the Who. It was released on 15 December 1967 by Track Records in the UK and Decca Records in the US. A concept album, The Who Sell Out is structured as a collection of unrelated songs interspersed with fake commercials and public service announcements. The album purports to be a broadcast by pirate radio station Radio London.

Released in 1967, this is The Who’s first attempt at a concept album: while the band really rolled with it creating a plot in Tommy, The Who Sell Out is supposed to be a tribute to the many pirate radio stations so popular then. It had a lot of fake radio commercials between the songs – the selling out'. The front and back cover further it by featuring the bandmembers using the products advertised in the vignettes. In the US The Who Sell Out was released on 6 January 1968 (Decca DL 4950, DL 74950 ) followed by the CD (MCA MCAD-31332) in the 1980s and remastered CD (MCAD-11268) in 1995. Disc Two consisted of the original 13 tracks in mono plus ten bonus tracks and out-takes

The Who Sell Out. By. Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone's Most Recent Stories. NBC Premieres New Series ‘Songland’ at Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood. This album is fantastic, it has an exquisite sense of humor (songs of the humbly homespun) and consummate musicianship. The cover, of course, is amazingly funny: deodorant, pimple cream, baked beans and the Charles Atlas course, each shot perfectly suited to the character of the person in the group. It’s almost too English. The first thing you are going to see are the commercial plugs and Radio London spots. They take various forms; the cover is the first.

The Who Sell Out is similar to A Quick One in a few ways. It is certainly more experimental than most other records. The music has a similar sound to it, except that The Sell Out album is much more refined and lasting. There is evening some dabbing in psychedelia for The Who, which would not be seen again. The album is in some ways a concept album; it is set up like a radio show, with a fair number of radio jingles and advertisements (performed as songs by The Who) between songs. The album represents the peak of the early Who (the pre-Tommy Who). The combined solid music and song writing with a good amount of studio experimentation and developement to produce a lasting record.

The Who are trying to keep up with the Zeitgeist, continuing the psychedelic theme they started playing with on "A Quick One", but I don't don't think you can successfully achieve a psychedelic sound without really being turned onto the whole psychedelic thing, and on this album, although you have some good musicianship and some amusing song writing, there's some pretty weak, clichéd songs. I don't think this has stood the test of time at all well.
