5 of 13. Chang and Eng Bunker. Chang and Eng Bunker were born outside of Bangkok, in what was then known as Siam. They are the origin of the term "Siamese Twins. In 1829 the two men joined . Barnum's circus and were exhibited as an oddity.
Altogether, the museum showed over 600, 000 exhibits during its existence. Tom Thumb and Jenny Lind. In April 1874 Barnum opened his Roman Hippodrome in New York; this was to grow into the great circus. Barnum's last great coup was his 1881 purchase from the London Zoo of the largest elephant in captivity, Jumbo.
Barnum specialized in displaying odd and intriguing attractions to audiences who were eager to pay to see something out of the ordinary. One of the main ways Barnum drew crowds was to exploit abnormalities in human beings. The display became known as his Freak Show, which traveled around the world and inspired many other circuses to follow suit with their own versions. It should be noted that freak is an outdated, and rather offensive term, since these people were simply that: people.
Barnum never himself used the phrase "there's a sucker born every minute. I gave up on this after an hour. My sister tried to watch it while I worked at the computer. Although I love the circus this was a farce. It was over acted as if the actors could talk over the poorly written script. The discussions in the family felt unproductive. After a while, who cares? I wanted to see . Barnum, not the Barnum family. I could see that type of conversation across the street.
That said, how much do you really know about the man behind one of America’s greatest traditions? In his time, . Barnum earned millions of dollars and changed the way America and the world perceived entertainment. However, that’s not all he managed to accomplish. Barnum’s most famous quote is There’s a sucker born every minute. The only problem with this is that he never actually said it. If anything, Barnum was known for being almost overly respectful of his audience, referring to them as willing participants, not suckers. Barnum had really bad luck when it came to fires. His mansion burned down; the wing at Tufts University where his animal specimens were stored burned down; and his famous museum burned down not once, but twice!
