Plas John Johnson Jr. (born July 21, 1931) is an American soul-jazz and hard bop tenor saxophonist, probably most widely known as the tenor saxophone soloist on Henry Mancini’s "The Pink Panther Theme". He also performs on alto and baritone sax as well as various flutes and clarinets. Born in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, he sang with his family's group until his saxophonist father bought him a soprano saxophone. Largely self-taught, he soon began playing alto and later tenor saxophone

Saxophone - Plas Johnson. The difference in the Warburton Neck System for me is the increase in volume and quality of sound in all registers. The band also noticed the difference. Thanks for everything. Plas has been one of the most well-known and sought-after musicians around the California studio scene. He joined "The Merv Griffin Show" band, led by Mort Lindsey, in 1970, where he remained for the next fifteen years, joining an all-star line-up which also included such prominent instrumentalists as Ray Brown, Herb Ellis, Jake Hanna, Benny Powell, Jack Sheldon, Kai Winding and others

Plas Johnson's cunning saxophone took the lead on Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther Theme" and is featured on such rock classics as the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. It's easy to hear why he was such a studio maven; Johnson can say a lot efficiently, and his understanding of Bop never interferes with his deep and emotional sense of swing. Only a handful of his solo dates remain in print, but they are worth seeking out. An amazingly consistent player, Evening Delight (1999) finds Johnson playing at the same high level he's been at for decades now. Nick Dedina.
