Wasp was the fifth studio album released by teen-idol, Shaun Cassidy in 1980. In an attempt to salvage a sinking pop career, Cassidy recruited Todd Rundgren to help "reinvent" his music career. Members of Rundgren's group Utopia also played on the record and the work had a decidedly "new wave" feel. The majority of tracks featured on Wasp were cover songs. The album featured a version of David Bowie's song, "Rebel Rebel" where Cassidy included a passage from The Crystals' "He's a Rebel.

Shaun Paul Cassidy (born September 27, 1958) is an American singer, actor, writer and producer. Cassidy starred in the television series The Hardy Boys Mysteries (1977–1979) and Breaking Away (1980–1981). In the 1980s and 90s, Cassidy worked almost exclusively as an actor in the theater, performing on Broadway and in the West End of London.

And most of the album rises above the dated arrangements, which mar some of the best selections. WASP is a gutsy album for Cassidy and, when he's not being overshadowed by his producer and backup band, a fine showcase for a talented singer.

The album never dented Billboard's Top 200 Album chart, but neither did the slicker album before it, and Cassidy soon moved on from the music business into an expanding television career; thus the last Cassidy record minus one slick European single "Memory Girl" released in 1989. Often Todd Rundgren's production work seems to make whoever he works with sound like a lot like Todd Rundgren himself and with Utopia as the backing band that is the case here. This album makes me feel 17 again - wow wow wow - The cover of Shake Me Wake Me is a classic - and Shaun really gives his everything on Rundgren pinned Selfless Love and WASP. This is a new wave classic - and everyone who loves the genre will love this record. The band is comprised of the members of Utopia - but Cassidy makes this his own record.
