New York City native Morton Gould () was a phenomenon: a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Grammy-winning conductor, prolific arranger and prodigious pianist who achieved equal renown in classical and popular music. Gould s eclectic RCA/Chicago repertoire reflects his exceptionally wide musical affinities. Of course there is American music, including Gould s own masterpiece Spirituals for Orchestra, which in 1941 became the first of his works to enter the standard repertoire. In February 1965, it occupied his first Chicago sessions along with Aaron Copland s Dance Symphony, which surprisingly had never before been recorded by an American orchestra.

Notes

Japan-for-U.S. CD reissue of the original Varèse Sarabande LP configuration (VCDM 1000.10), with the addition of one previously unreleased track ("Fanfare For Freedom"), all taken from 1979 digital recording sessions performed by Morton Gould and The London Symphony Orchestra under the personal supervision of Dr. Thomas Stockham. The release includes an eight-page booklet with a brief note concerning "Fanfare For Freedom" by Tom Null; liner notes by the composer/conductor concerning the other selections; a black-and-white photo of the composer/conductor; and color front and back covers, the former featuring a reproduction of a painting by an unidentified artist, and the latter featuring a color photo of the composer/conductor. (The title of the release is given as "Morton Gould Conducts Morton Gould" on both the back of the inlay card and the CD label; as "Morton Gould Conducts His Latin American Symphonette, Philharmonic Waltzes, Quickstep, Festive Music, Cotillion, Windjammer, Fanfare For Freedom" on the booklet; and as "Latin-American Symphonette" on the spine -- since the first iteration is mentioned twice, I believe it to be the correct title!)
