Pete Seeger serves as recording supervisor for an album of country dance music played by a five-piece "washboard band" consisting of himself on five-string banjo, Sonny Terry on harmonica, Brownie McGhee on guitar, Frank Robertson on bass guitar, and William Edward Cook on washboard. McGhee, Robertson, and Cook constitute the rhythm section, over which Seeger and Terry play melodies and take solos.
The washboard and frottoir (from Cajun French "frotter", to rub) are used as a percussion instrument, employing the ribbed metal surface of the cleaning device as a rhythm instrument. Often the washboard has additional traps, such as a wood block, a cowbell, and even small cymbals
The Washboard Resonators sound like a ragtime street band mixed with a Hollywood musical that wandered into a theatre somewhere in around 1932. Hokum, blues, skiffle, jazz, calypso, swing, vaudeville and comedy.

Seeger's model was Great Britain's Workers Music Association, founded in 1939 by members of England's Communist Party.
