Simpson self-funded the album. The record is named after a cemetery near Jackson, Kentucky where many of his family are buried.

The title is an homage to the album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music by Ray Charles.

Sturgill Simpson is an independent Neotraditional Country artist from Jackson, Kentucky, and based out of Nashville, Tennessee. He’s played music all his life – I’ve always played music. But you know, in eastern Kentucky, everybody plays music. It’s never something you ever think for a second growing up, Oh, I can do this for a living. It’s what you do after work, (NPR Interview) – but he started taking it seriously in 2012, releasing debut High Top Mountain in 2013 and second album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music in 2014
