Now is the Time is a series of impeccably performed tracks culled from Alex Blake's live sessions at New York's Knitting Factory. Though nothing intensely brilliant evolves out of Now, the musicianship is paramount and unmatched on any late-'90s jazz recordings. Blake, who started as a bass player in Sun Ra's Arkestra at a very young age, sits himself comfortably in the background as it seems piano and drums take most of the attention on the record.

A live performance compilation was released by Bubble Core Records in 2000 titled Now Is the Time: Live at the Knitting Factory In addition to leading his own group, Blake also performs and records with Randy Weston, as well as other musicians. Now Is the Time: Live at the Knitting Factory.

Alex Blake, bass Chris Hunter, soprano, alto and tenor saxophone Ted Cruz, piano Victor Jones, drums Bidal Roy, tables. Panamanian-born and New York-raised, Alex Blake draws upon his eclectic Latin and post bop experience to create exciting and original music. Blake was precociously talented as a youth, touring with Sun Ra as a teenager, and later with Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard and McCoy Tyner, though he cites Jimi Hendrix as a primary influence.

Pharoah Sanders Black Unity (Impulse! . You’ve Got to Have Freedom’ is revisited and given an extended 10-minute playing time, alongside another live staple, ‘Africa’ itself. The Coltrane original is another lovely ballad, ‘Naima,’ from Coltrane’s 1959 Atlantic album, Giant Steps. Recorded in Holland during a European tour, the line-up on Africa is typical of Sanders’ touring bands of the 1980s and early 1990s, using a quartet format.
