Featuring Black Harold, Flute. Sun Ra Arkestra Featuring Pharaoah Sanders, Black Harold. Alan Silva - Live At Judson Hall 1964 ‎(CDr, Album, RE, Unofficial).

Sun Ra and his Arkestra appeared on the 31st, along with the New York Art Quartet. All of the music from the Four Days in December series was recorded by the JCG for its own label; a December 1964 announcement in Down Beat indicates that a sampler LP was planned as the first release. Almost a dozen years later (1976), Sun Ra issued the LP "Featuring Pharoah Sanders and Black Harold" Sun Ra: piano, celeste Pharoah Sanders: tenor sax Marshall Allen: alto sax, flute, percussion Danny Davis: alto sax, flute, percussion Pat Patrick: baritone sax Robert Cummings: bass clarinet, percussion Teddy Nance: trombone Bernard Pettaway: trombone Robert Northern: French horn Al Evans: trumpet, flugelhorn Chris Capers: trumpet Alan Silva: bass Clifford Jarvis: drums Black Harold : flute, log drum Art Jenkins: space voice, percussion.

Sanders, who had been hired as a door greeter for Arkestra performances and was a cook at the restaurant downstairs from Judson, tried repeatedly to join the band, and was finally granted admission when John Gilmore left the group briefly to go on the road with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Murray adds a certain exotic element to the ensemble, playing flute, and on occasion log drums. Coalescing with the strident bowed bass of Ronnie Boykins and Ra's sporadic piano chords, the band shatters all semblance of static rhythm, especially when drummers Clifford Jarvis and Jimmhi Johnson are given their head in a heated, lengthy, dueling duet.

Despite the technological limitations, Ra used some innovative recording techniques, and these recordings provided an unprecedented level of documentation, and were inspirational in showing how artists could take control of the means of production and distribution of their works. Sun Ra and his Myth Science Arkestra. Featuring Pharoah Sanders & Black Harold.

To understand the significance of the word ‘featuring’ on Featuring Pharoah Sanders And Black Harold, consider how infrequently Sun Ra used it and the exact way it had been used.

Featuring Pharoah Sanders and Black Harold is a jazz album by Sun Ra, recorded live in 1964, but not released until 1976, on Ra and Alton Abraham's El Saturn label. The record documents the earliest known recorded performance of "The Shadow World" (here reverse-named as "The World Shadow"), a complex structured piece which was to feature on several of Ra's better known records of subsequent years, notably The Magic City. Also featured is the obscure flautist, Black Harold (Harold Murray), who takes a solo, vocalising through his flute, Rahsaan Roland Kirk-style, on 'The Voice of Pan' (continuing into 'Dawn over Israel. ) This is Sanders' only recording with Sun Ra, and he is not a major presence, taking only one solo on the first track. Ra himself plays several short piano solos and introductions.
