Jane Duboc, a Brazilian, is pleasant-voiced enough and at times even affecting - but only a faint echo of Elis Regina. This album is satisfying as jazz performance, but has the aura of a 'project' and thus seems to lack a centre; it rarely rises above pleasant, and fails to get under the skin. Contrast this with 1974's Tom & Elis, a truly transcendent album, with its incomparably better material (the Jobim covers on Paraiso are not impressive), plus some of Tom's best piano ever, and of course the exceptional Elis Regina, a singer of such gut-wrenching depth of feeling.

Duboc sings well, although her voice never sticks in one's mind, and Mulligan has short solos and mostly sticks to the background; they are joined by a couple of Brazilian rhythm sections. Pleasant music that mostly stands out as a historical curiosity in Gerry Mulligan's discography.

Born in Belem do Para, Brazil, Jane Duboc Vaquer is used to singing. At thirteen she participated in philanthropic shows at school, on television and at festivals. She received an award and starred a tv commercial. At college she not only studied orchestration, lyric singing, flute and dramatic arts, but also taught History of Music. She returned to Brazil in the 70’s. Then formed the Fein Jazz Band, a group that performed only songs in English. She recorded a single ("Pollution") produced by Raul Seixas.
