The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Volume Eight is an album by pianist Art Tatum and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, with Red Callender on double bass and Bill Douglass on drums. The 1956 session was originally released in 1958 on Verve Records album produced by Norman Granz as The Art Tatum - Ben Webster Quartet, but Granz re-acquired the masters in the 1970s after the album was allowed to go out of print
For Art Tatum, the piano was a veritable playground, a forum for endless invention. His supreme command of the instrument and his unparalleled sense of timing and touch allowed him to seemingly accomplish whatever he wished. Songs were puzzles to be dismantled and reassembled; melody, harmony, and rhythm were merely variables in the never-ending creation process. Alltogether there are 39 seperate tracks of Art Tatum playing mostly standards in this live recording setup taped at two different Hollywood parties by Ray Heindorf in April 16, 1950 and in July 3, 1955. The 1955 party was probably thrown to celebrate the wrap up of shooting Jack Webb's PETE KELLY'S BLUES although as the booklet notes say, it really seems like a celebration of Art Tatum as much as anything else.

A Cleveland broadcast from 1934 (less than a year after his initial recordings) features Tatum performing some rare material (particularly "Young & Healthy" and "Morning, Noon & Night"); he is also heard in duet with bassist Junior Raglin (1945's "The Man I Love") and on an extensive solo broadcast from the same year. Art Tatum was an amazing pianist and no jazz collection is complete without a few of his recordings.
