Art Tatum was undoubtedly the greatest jazz pianist for most of his career, and few have approached his genius at the keyboard. This unusual LP of solo piano complies airchecks from a 1934 Cleveland broadcast as well as two tracks from a 1950 Cafe Society broadcast.

The Tatum Group Masterpieces, Volume Eight is an album by pianist Art Tatum and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, with Red Callender on double bass and Bill Douglass on drums. The 1956 session was originally released in 1958 on Verve Records album produced by Norman Granz as The Art Tatum - Ben Webster Quartet, but Granz re-acquired the masters in the 1970s after the album was allowed to go out of print

He attended a school for the blind in Columbus, Ohio, and studied music for two years in Toledo. He first played as a professional locally; subsequent performances on local radio (1929–31) led to engagements all over the country and by 1938 he was playing in Europe. He usually performed in a trio with bass and guitar. His last big concert was in the Hollywood Bowl in 1956.
