But even if punk rock began as a kind of negation - a call to stark, brutal simplicity - its musical variety and transforming emotional power was immediate and remains staggering. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Ramones’ toweringly influential self-titled debut, we’ve compiled a list of the 40 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time. Ultimately, we found ourselves pulled toward records that embodied punk’s spirit, and even stretched it a little.

Punk rock is in its fucking forties - a frightening thought if there ever was one - and over that span the genre has produced many more than 50 great albums. Therefore, it's likely that anyone who reads this list will be outraged by some glaring omission - some of you might even pogo right over to our offices and deliver us a fresh knuckle sandwich. Touch and Go, 1987) About as comfortable as an unanesthetized root canal, Big Black's second album capped a four-year career that proved punk needn't be straightforward to be strong. The Gun Club - 'Fire of Love'.

Punk rock has a tendency to lie about its age. There’s endless debate over what the first punk recording is: The Ramones’ self-titled debut? The Damned’s debut single, New Rose ? Or perhaps something even older, by The Stooges or MC5. Maybe it existed with the first blown-out riff by an early garage rock band. It’s been around at least 40 years, however, that much we can be sure of. And 2017 marks 40 years since punk’s most iconic and influential year, 1977. Punk, for the most part, is fairly easy to define
