Romantic poetry is the poetry of the Romantic era, an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century. It involved a reaction against prevailing Enlightenment ideas of the 18th century, and lasted from 1800 to 1850, approximately.
Read this article to know about the Romantic Poets in English Literature, great poets of the romantic age, most famous romantic poets, romantic poets. Born in London, he had no formal education and had a little earning. For Blake, the imagination was man’s sole redeeming feature and through it, he could see glories of nature. His important works are: Songs of Innocence, Songs of Experience, Holy Thursday. After growing up in the Lake District, Wordsworth was educated at St. John’s College, Cambridge.
Wordsworth called poetry the spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling, and in 1833 John Stuart Mill defined poetry as feeling itself, employing thought only as the medium of its utterance. It followed that the best poetry was that in which the greatest intensity of feeling was expressed, and hence a new importance was attached to the lyric. Another key quality of Romantic writing was its shift from the mimetic, or imitative, assumptions of the Neoclassical era to a new stress on imagination. Useful as it is to trace the common elements in Romantic poetry, there was little conformity among the poets themselves. It is misleading to read the poetry of the first Romantics as if it had been written primarily to express their feelings. Their concern was rather to change the intellectual climate of the age.

Romantic poetry did not suddenly arrive in Britain with the publication of Blake’s Songs of Innocence or Wordsworth and Coleridge’s joint venture, the Lyrical Ballads (1798). There had been a growing interest in different types of poetry to do with three topics: nature, heightened feelings, and primitive cultures. Less well-known poets wrote of the English countryside, such as George Crabbe (1754-1832), whose The Borough: A Poem, in Twenty-four Letters (1810) inspired Benjamin Britten’s most famous opera, Peter Grimes (pr. 1945), and John Clare (1793-1864), whose The Village Minstrel, and Other Poems appeared in 1821.
