The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is an English orchestra with a remit to serve the South and South West of England. Founded in 1893, the BSO has developed a reputation as one of the UK's major orchestras and has worked with many of the world's leading composers, conductors and performers. Originally based in Bournemouth, the BSO moved its offices to the adjacent town of Poole in 1979.

Sir William Walton: Collected Works. The first disc contains the Symphony No 1 performed by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andre Previn, a performance (from 1966) that is regarded as the finest of this music. The symphony is followed by the Violin Concerto (played by Jascha Heifetz, who commissioned the work. The recording is performed by the Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer, and was recorded in 1950. The sound of the Violin Concerto is mono but the recording is well balanced and the historic nature of the performance makes it a must hear. There is simply no better interpretation, so this is the one to have. Sound is good, though vintage stereo (1966).

Composer: William Walton Composition: Symphonies 1 and 2 Performer: Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra/ Kirill Karabits Catalogue Number: ONYX ONYX4168. The First Symphony’s greatest recording is almost universally judged to be André Previn’s 1966 LSO, all the more amazing since Previn’s exposure to British music had been minimal. The composer’s own recording of the work with the old Philharmonia in its palmiest days was also excellent (giving the lie to the notion that most composers, except Bernstein, made lousy interpreters of their own scores)
