Camille Saint-Saëns composed his Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33 in 1872, when the composer was 37 years old. He wrote this work for the Belgian cellist, viola de gamba player and instrument maker Auguste Tolbecque. Tolbecque was part of a distinguished family of musicians closely associated with the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, France’s leading concert society. The concerto was first performed on January 19, 1873 at the Paris conservatoire concert with Tolbecque as soloist

It's an enchanting little piece, and it's ideal for a concert or recording that features a violin and a cello, adding to the sparse repertory for that pair of instruments. It also exists in a piano trio version
The violin concerto, dazzling and lyrical in equal measure, is here wonderfully played; if the cello concerto is less successful, it is perhaps because Gautier Capucon’s sound, as recorded, is too slight for such a red-blooded work. The brothers come together however in a warmly characterful reading of La Muse et le Poete that is entirely persuasive. Excellent support from their compatriots.
