Like the previous album, Volume 2 would suffer under the weight of its own pastiche if it weren’t so darn endearing, filled as it is with call-and-response vocals, studio reverb, sweeping orchestrations, and other bygone tricks of the trade. Deschanel still has some flaws as a vocalist - her twang sometimes gets the best of her, pushing parts of the melody flat - but she smartly plays to her strengths, with a hint of vibrato and a sly, audible smile coloring her best performances

Volume Two picks up almost exactly where Volume One left off, with Deschanel still playing a smart, sensitive young woman often on the unrequited end of love but never letting romantic disappointment get her down: "Sometimes lonely isn't sad," she declares on the stately opener "Thieves". She's still the headstrong heroine, though: "Why do I always want to sock it to you hard?" she wonders on "Over It Over Again", sounding as playfully frustrated as Loretta Lynn. And Ward remains content to cede her the spotlight, toiling behind the camera

She & Him : Volume Two. Label: Merge. The content of Volume Two nay not differ too terribly from Volume One, but why mess with perfection? The music of She & Him is still a refreshing change from the usual indie fare, all innocence, sweetness and light as opposed to postmodern angst. The pairing of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel is proving once again to be a magical combination, but then, we should have seen it coming. The him that Zooey goes home to is Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard. But the effortlessly charming Deschanel – whose marry me eyes have shined in films as good as Elf and as bad as Yes Man – could hardly be accused of seeking her husband's approval. DCFC fans won't notice Zooey going anywhere that band's particular brand of strident yet melancholy indie-rock on this veritable sunshine fest of an album. Deschanel and Ward pay a fat homage to nostalgia on Volume Two – this enjoyably whimsical enterprise smacks of rose-tinted memories of teenage kisses and school dances.

Like She & Him’s first album Volume One (with this band name and these album titles, one could question if they are giving the details the attention they deserve), Volume Two’s first single is the least indicative song of the album as a whole in the collection. In The Sun, though containing a distinctly different production quality (perhaps because of the Tilly and The Wall contribution), does at least captures the way makes the listener feel, the intent. This quality, especially noticeable on the breezy Me and You, elevates the collection past bubblegum pop, because though the tracks tend not to be emotionally involving, the aesthetic is captivating and it’s effect lingers beyond the act of listening. Volume Two has a strange power to brighten a whole day by opening up memories you don’t know you have. Heavy shit for music as light as can be. Not all the songs are successful, unfortunately.

Save for the occasional song seemingly arranged by rote, Volume Two delivers the expected sweetness, but on a grander scale than the duo’s debut. 80. Like the previous album, Volume 2 would suffer under the weight of its own pastiche if it weren’t so darn endearing, filled as it is with call-and-response vocals, studio reverb, sweeping orchestrations, and other bygone tricks of the trade.
