The Chicago blackened doom band Indian's fifth album wields as much power from a distance as it does in close quarters. With ex-Wolves in the Throne Room guitarist Will Lindsay re-enlisting to split guitars and vocals, and Bloodyminded mastermind Mark Solotroff adding sheets of noise, it's an album whose every layer seems customized and every crease deliberate. It’s just nuanced, the condition that makes From All Purity more than a loud record with good riffs and belligerent intentions.

Every second seeks to pack its punches and leave its bruises, but the way the album is paced and built-up, slowly-paced but progressive, helps in making it an attention-worthy listen. While a bit repetitive every now and then, there is no doubt that this record holds just as much brains as it has brawn.

On ‘From All Purity’ Indian take their infamously hateful aggression to new levels of despair. Now augmented with an even keener sense of harsh noise, all the trademark elements of Indian’s sound have been refined to reach new lows of powerful and punishing anguish. This is the opposite of easy listening. ezclipper Again Indian creates a powerful behemoth of an album that stands alone in its power. They just keep bringing it, again and again, without regurgitation of their previous work. Serious fucking masters of sonic beauty that caresses your soul while tearing your lungs out of your chest.

Indian : From All Purity. That approach yields some triumphantly nasty sounds on From All Purity, their fifth album in a series of albums that maintain both a guttural intensity and slight variations on a similarly cool/macabre cover design aesthetic. Its six songs mostly hover around the six-minute mark, working out their burly, screeching catharsis slowly and viciously, making every thunderous riff crash down with maximum impact.

Apparently, Indian didn’t get that memo. The Illinois quartet’s fifth album From All Purity may not sound particularly Native American, but it’s not hard to imagine that it was born of a thirst for Fire Water and retribution as the band rips through six gritty tracks with the subtlety of a tomahawk. Riding the dirtiest guitar tone this side of Thou and a terrifying performance by vocalist Dylan O’Toole, From All Purity is, for better or for worse, as relentless and overstated as modern metal gets.

With this being their fourth full-length LP, Indian certainly knows what they do best, and From All Purity is a mighty display of such. But the fact remains that this album will be very alienating to those uninitiated with this kind of music, and alienating is certainly putting it diplomatically. Those in the mood for some mammoth claustrophobic sludge will find a real treat here, but the casual listener will undoubtedly be scared off. But no matter who you are or what you listen to, Indian has proved one thing for sure on From All Clarity. They can’t be bargained with.
