Artist: Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. Album: Whipped Cream & Other Delights, 1965. The 1 pop album of 1965. This song (along with Lollipops & Roses) was used as the theme song for the television show "The Dating Game". Whipped Cream & Other Delights sold over 6 million copies in the United States and the album cover alone is considered a classic pop culture icon. Allen Toussaint's title composition "Whipped Cream" garnered significant attention, but not as a chart hit. Now, 40 years later, Herb Alpert is back, with new solos mixed in alongside even newer grooves by some of the most innovative artists around. There's even a brand-new girl on the cover. With Whipped Cream & Other Delights Rewhipped, some of the artists he's influenced have created a fun and modern tribute to his landmark album. This album is really an Alpert solo album as opposed to another TJB effort. Herb lays down some new trumpet parts and seems to be having a great time doing it, and this turns into a very jazzy effort. The rhythms are more modern sounding, with some heavy backbeats, but most of this album still swings as did the original. In particular, "Lollipops & Roses" has an urban big band feel to it, with Herb playing some hot horn on top. "Whipped Cream" has a very funky feel to it, yet never loses the original appeal.
Whipped Cream & Other Delights by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. As Herb Alpert remembers it, he was in a recording studio one day in 1965 when the art director for A&M, the label Alpert co-owned, showed him the photograph that would soon grace one of the most memorable LP covers of all time. My first reaction was, 'Holy shit, man. Too racy,' Alpert says. It was, because the LP in question, Whipped Cream & Other Delights, attributed to Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass, was his breakout album, and the photo in question was the now iconic shot of a seemingly nude, doe-eyed young woman sunk up to her décolletage in what appears to be a giant pile of the titular dessert topping. Looking askance at the camera, she touches a long cream-tipped finger to her lips. On her head is an added dollop of white, evoking, maybe, one of Billie Holiday’s signature gardenias.
