Fantasie and Fugue on Ad nos, ad salutarem undam. Franz Liszt Composer. Christian Schmitt (org). Variations on 'Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen' (Bach). Liszt’s Ad nos, ad salutarem undam is one of the greatest works written for the organ, a thrilling Gothic masterpiece lasting nearly half an hour. The French organist and composer Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) made an arrangement for organ and orchestra, commissioned for the Wanamaker Foundation in Philadelphia and performed, just once, on the Wanamaker organ (still the world’s largest) in what is now Macy’s.

Humphrey Searle calls these works-the Fantasy and Fugue on the chorale "Ad nos, ad salutarem undam" and the Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H-Liszt's "only important original organ works", and Derek Watson, writing in his 1989 Liszt, considered them among the most significant organ works of the nineteenth century, heralding the work of such key organist-musicians. Liszt also wrote some smaller organ works, including a prelude (1854) and set of variations on the first section of movement 2 chorus from Bach's cantata Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, BWV 12 (which Bach later reworked as the Crucifixus in the Mass in B minor), which he composed after the death of his daughter in 1862.

Liszt: Variations on a theme from 'Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen' (J S Bach) for organ, S673. Thus, Liszt bases the monumental composition Fantasy and Fugue on the chorale ‘Ad nos, ad salutarem undam’ on a hymn from the opera Le Prophète by Giacomo Meyerbeer. Funérailles, originally a part of Liszt’s piano cycle Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, appears in an adaptation by the French composer Jeanne Demessieux.
