César Auguste Franck, Camille Saint-Saëns, Franz Liszt, Max Reger. Raúl Prieto Ramirez at the organ of Milan cathedral. Max Reger’s fantasies for organ are, like Liszt’s works, virtually symphonic poems for solo organ. The op40/2 work is divided into 6 movements, and each mirrors the text of the Protestant chorale on which the work is based – anger, sin and love - all are depicted here. Cesar Franck’s Piece Heroique is the last of his Three Pieces for organ composed in 1878 for the inaugural concerts of the new Cavaille-Coll organ in the Salle des Fetes in the Palais du Trocadero. The Franco-Prussian war had just ended, and the French had been defeated. The troops marched through Paris in 1871

as Reger, Franck, and Saint-Saëns, among others. Ad nos is an extended fantasia, Adagio, and fugue, lasting over half an hour, and the Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H includes chromatic writing which sometimes removes the sense of tonality. Liszt also wrote some smaller organ works, including a prelude (1854) and set of variations on the first section of movement 2 chorus from Bach's cantata Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, BWV 12 (which Bach later reworked as the Crucifixus in the Mass in B minor), which he composed after the death of his daughter in 1862. Liszt, in some of his works, supported the relatively new idea of programme music-that is, music intended to evoke extra-musical ideas such as a depiction of a landscape, a poem, a particular character or personage. Temperley, Nicholas, "Symphony: II. 19th century".
