The Doobie Brothers with the addition of Michael McDonald in 1976. Both Streets and Fault Line reflected Johnston's diminished role in the group following his illness. Restored to fitness and briefly back in the fold, he contributed one original song to Streets ("Turn It Loose"), and also sang a verse on Simmons' tune "Wheels of Fortune". This lineup toured throughout 1979, including stops at Madison Square Garden and New York City's Battery Park for the No Nukes benefit shows with like-minded artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Crosby, Stills & Nash, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Jackson Browne, Bruce Springsteen and John Hall. On September 28, 2010, the Doobie Brothers released their 13th studio album, World Gone Crazy, produced by their longtime producer Ted Templeman. World Gone Crazy was the first Doobie Brothers album Templeman produced since 1980's One Step Closer.
The Doobie Brothers are led by Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons and John McFee. AXS recently spoke with Tom Johnston about The Doobie Brothers upcoming residency, the albums, career highlights and more in this exclusive new interview. AXS: What inspired this Doobie Brothers two-night residency at The Beacon? Tom Johnston: I’ve been requesting that we play at The Beacon for a few years now. For me, it’s one of those places that sits in the hall of rock fame of places to play. TJ: We had already been performing live with Mike Hossack before we ever did that album. We did our first tour with John Hartman, and at some point, after that, we tried it with two drummers. We decided we liked it. Mike was such a good drummer and it added a whole other feeling to playing live. So, when we got into the studio, that transferred over to all the songs we were cutting. It was pretty easy to do.

Sort of. Here's what he told us: "The words were written last, and they were made up around this whole idea of this wacky little town with a sheriff that had a Samurai Sword and all that sort of thing. Payne was the pianist for Little Feat, and recorded with many other artists, including Elton John and James Taylor. Says Johnston: "the piano lick went, 'Dadadadun, dadadadadundun. It was an Oriental sounding lick.

The third album closes up the smooth sounds of Michael McDonald and repoens the group with almost the same lineup as they did on the Toulhouse St album + roadie turned conga player Bobby LaKind for what sadly could be called their two "bad 80's albums". Hey, I like the Cycles album and Brotherhood is tolerable, but neither one touches Stampede or The Captain and Me, even on their best day).
