While most folks may not have heard of Dvorák 's Quintet for strings and double bass, the second of its five movements is one of the most popular of his works. Known in the quintet as Intermezzo, the second movement received wider circulation when arranged for string orchestra and re-named Nocturne. Either in or out of the quintet, the Intermezzo - Nocturne is one of Dvorák 's sweetest and most sensual pieces but, in context, it makes more sense as one movement, one mood, among many.
Antonín Dvořák's String Quintet No. 2 in G major, Op. 77 (B. 49), was originally composed in early March 1875 and first performed on March 18, 1876 in Prague at the concert of the Umělecká beseda. It is scored for two violins, viola, cello, and double bass. First marked as Op. 18, it was later slightly revised in 1888 as Op. 77. It has since been assigned the Burghauser number B. 49. Dvořák entered the piece in a competition and was awarded 5 ducats for the composition.

Antonín Dvořák, director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York City, 1892–95, composed the String Quartet in F major op. 96 early in the summer of 1893 in Spillville, Iowa, where he went to spend his vacation. While Dvořák personally gave the symphony shortly before its première its famous tag From the new world, the title American quartet for opus 96 did not come from the composer himself. Also repeatedly claimed for this work are the influences of native Americans and Afro-Americans, but answering the question of what then is tangibly American in the American quartet is by no means simple, as Hartmut Schick was able to show in his article.

After Antonin Dvořák finished composing his String Quartet No. 12, Op. 96, in F Major, he wrote at the end of the manuscript, Thanks be to God. I am satisfied. The American in this quartet refers to the sights and sounds that Dvořák experienced while vacationing in Spillville. By combining these American characteristics into his own Bohemian compositional style, Dvořák created a new fusion of the two that still retain its freshness today. Today, the String Quartet No. 12 is one of Dvořák ’s most played works. The piece is a standard string quartet with four movements: The first movement is in sonata form, the second movement is a slow aria, the third movement is a scherzo with two trios and the final movement is a sonata-rondo.
