Manitas de Plata "might" not have the techical finesse of Paco de Lucia or Sabicas and all the new players, BUT nobody EVER really rocked it like he did. The pity is that this Carnegie Hall concert CD, great as it is, is not the best representation of his playing. That all happened on the apparently lost recordings made on the Connoisseur Society label back in the 1960s. This is the album that is marked with "Grand Prix de Disque,1968. This performance at Carnegie Hall shows Manitas at his best in front of an adoring audience, playing with great technical skill but nevertheless outside the framework of flamenco rhythms, thus rendering moot his reputation as a flamenco guitarist. A highlight on the CD is the singing of Jose Reyes, in whose tortured cries of despair one can sense the sorrows and struggles of everyday life.

The name Manitas de Plata (little silver hands) was bestowed on him as a self-taught prodigy in his Gypsy community. In his sleeve notes for De Plata’s debut album in 1965, the US journalist Vincent Sheean wrote that the musician had learned from the instrument everything it has to teac. e lives in his music as the fish lives in the sea. The path to worldwide acclaim was not straightforward. He performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and gave a concert in honour of human rights at the United Nations (where he and Reyes used secretary general U Thant’s office as a changing room). In his entertaining Dalí in New York (1965), the film-maker Jack Bond showed Reyes and De Plata performing for Salvador Dalí while he painted an image of Don Quixote.

WHEN Denise Glaser, a reporter for French TV, went in 1965 to talk to Manitas de Plata, then the world’s most famous flamenco player, the interview was rather strange. So she asked him to play on his guitar, at her prompting, the elements of his life. Somewhat quizzically, he obeyed . The Gypsy Flamenco album was released in 1963, with his cousin José Reyes singing, and global stardom was the result. Flamenco specialists sniffed at his improvised riffs, the stops and starts and lack of metrical structure. He cared nothing for them.
