Dust Bowl Ballads is an album by Woody Guthrie, recorded for Victor Records in Camden, New Jersey in 1940. It was Guthrie's first commercial recording and the most successful album he made. It is considered to be the first or one of the very first concept albums. The Dust Bowl Ballads was originally released as two three-disc collections of 78 rpm records.
Talking Dust Bowl Blues. Produced by R. P. Weatherald. Album Dust Bowl Ballads. Talking Dust Bowl Blues Lyrics. Back in Nineteen Twenty-Seven I had a little farm and I called that heaven Well, the prices up and the rain come down And I hauled my crops all into town - I got the money, bought clothes and groceries Fed the kids, and raised a family.
Indeed, "Tom Joad" is nothing less than the plot of the book set to music. The story begins, as "The Great Dust Storm (Dust Storm Disaster)" has it, "On the fourteenth day of April of 1935," when a giant dust storm hits the Great Plains, transforming the landscape.
Listening to Woody Guthrie's Dust Bowl Ballads is something akin to an American History lesson. On the other hand, it's also something like looking into a mirror to see our own times. While, mercifully, we are not experiencing a dust bowl disaster, we seem to be sharing many of the same social difficulties. Guthrie writes songs to express the miseries of poverty, greed and even the kind of criminality that we have come to see from Wall Street brokers and powerful banking interests.
