Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie (July 14, 1912 – October 3, 1967) was an American singer-songwriter and folk musician whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children's songs, ballads and improvised works. Country & Folk Roots Album.
The term American folk music encompasses numerous music genres, variously known as traditional music, traditional folk music, contemporary folk music, or roots music. Many traditional songs have been sung within the same family or folk group for generations, and sometimes trace back to such origins as Great Britain, Europe, or Africa all the music that fits between the cracks.
Woody Guthrie's published recordings are culled from a series of recording sessions in the 1940s and 1950s. The more detailed section on recording sessions lists the song by recording date.
In 1969, when this first solo album from Joe McDonald was issued, knowledge of Woody Guthrie was variable with few being able to appreciate his importance within American music. Country Joe was one of the first to issue a body of work that underlined clearly that Woody should have a place of honour within musical history. During the preceding few years, while working as the leader of the Fish, Joe had on occasion let his country roots show musically, so the choice to cut country songs was one obvious option

Guthrie, Woody - Woody's Roots LP 1. 01. Poor Bo. Guthrie ranks as one of country music's great singer-songwriters, but his politically charged songs brought him a radically different audience. Woodrow Wilson Guthrie was born July 14, 1912, in Okemah, Oklahoma, a small agricultural community in the west-central part of the state. His parents lived a comfortable middle-class existence until a family tragedy in May 1919 signaled a turn in the family fortunes.
