The Ultimate Queen site, featuring album details, videos and DVD's, song lyrics and versions, demos, unreleased songs, discographies, galleries and concerts. Recorded at the Rainbow Theatre, London, England, on 19 and 20 November 1974. This album was released as a single disc or 'deluxe' double disc set, as both a CD and download, and as two or four LP sets. The double disc CD and download, and 4 LP set, include a second bonus disc containing the show also recorded at The Rainbow on the 'Queen II' tour, on 31 March 1974. The show was earlier released, in part, on the 'Live At The Rainbow' video in the 'Box Of Tricks' boxed set in 1992.
This show at the Rainbow Theatre was Queen's first "big" headlining gig. The show was properly recorded and was later proposed to be the band's first live album, but ultimately shelved. It was eventually released officially in 2014. Freddie is seen in an elegant new white outfit at the beginning of the show, created by designer Zandra Rhodes. Their lift was meteorical. So many people had challenged if Queen had the authority to play in such a prestigious place as the Rainbow. Freddie appeared in his new specially eccentric white "eagle's" costume, bouncing and miming with even bigger ecstasy than ever and sang even better than any time before. One couldn't believe it's the first time of Queen appearing themselves in such an important place. After a while they got used to taking advantage of the big stage. After two encores they left the stage during a big applause of the audience.
The first set on "Queen Live at the Rainbow 74" (recorded in March of 1974) was originally intended to be released as a live record to help support Queen's first two albums but was shelved in favor of recording their next studio album (which would eventually become "Sheer Heart Attack"). That said, the material on the CD may not be familiar to many people who identify themselves as Queen fans (and that's completely understandable).
