The Black Rider is an album by Tom Waits, released in 1993 on Island Records, featuring studio versions of songs Waits wrote for the play The Black Rider, directed by Robert Wilson and co-written by William S. Burroughs. The play is based on the German folktale Der Freischütz, which had previously been made into an opera by Carl Maria von Weber. The play premiered on March 31, 1990, at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, Germany.

This album contains songs Tom Waits wrote and performed for the stage production of The Black Rider directed by Robert Wilson and written by William Burroughs.

The Black Rider tells an updated version of a 19th century story of a clerk who makes a Faustian contract with the Devil, accepting magic bullets to win the hand of his beloved in a shooting contest. Wilson's vivid images paid homage to German expressionism, Waits performed a shotgun marriage between Tin Pan Alley and burlesque horror music, while Burroughs' politically acute librettos gave unique insight into the mind of a character whose actions lead to tragic consequences.

Performance of the play was done by The Talia Theatre Of Hamburg.
Album recorded at Prairie Sun Recording Studios, Cotati, California and Music Factory, Hamburg, Germany.
