I'm Not Part Of Me On their third full-length, Cleveland-bred outfit Cloud Nothings give joy a hard, sharp edge. I was feeling pretty good about everything so I just made stuff that made me happy, says founding member and mild-mannered chief songwriter Dylan Baldi of "Here and Nowhere Else. I had nothing to be angry about really so the approach was more positive and less ‘fuck everything. It’s the product of only having a couple of minutes here and there. But Cloud Nothings would enjoy a full week with Congleton at Water Music in Hoboken, New Jersey, followed by three days of mixing at his own studio in Dallas shortly thereafter.
Cloud Nothings' 2012 album Attack on Memory aspired to be not only the band's first great album, but one that would eradicate their introductory phase as Dylan Baldi’s solo, no-fi pop-punk project. It succeeded wildly on the first count, the second one not so much: on singles Stay Useless and Fall In, Steve Albini scoured the reverb and fuzz just to further expose Baldi's facility with bittersweet melody. The insatiable drive and urgency of Here and Nowhere Else, as well as the resulting cohesion, means that it might initially appear less ambitious than Attack on Memory. To call it a grower would be accurate, though that downplays its visceral jolt, as previous Cloud Nothings records revealed their high points fairly quickly; here, the initial sonic beating's reflected in the unmistakable shades of purple, black, and blue-black in the resultant bruises.

In the spirit of Japandroids' instant classic Celebration Rock from 2012, Here and Nowhere Else captures the sound and spirit of guys who've learned over time how to best harness their own vitality. On both records, that includes a periodic willingness to embrace joy in ways Cloud Nothings rarely attempted before. The snarling ferocity of past records hasn't been muted so much as channeled and streamlined.

What Here and Nowhere Else proves - beyond a reasonable doubt - is that this transformation is all Cloud Nothings’ doing. The studio they chose was merely the cocoon that housed their metamorphosis. Recorded with John Congleton (Baroness, St. Vincent), Here and Nowhere Else builds upon the post-hardcore foundation of its predecessor and fleshes it out with more intensity and stronger melodies. There’s a newfound warmth in a track like Now Hear In, which opens the album on a Jetstream of nourishing fuzz riffs. You’re unlikely to find an album this year that puts as much muscle and sweat behind ideas like maturity and acceptance. The young adults are alright. After Cloud Nothings’ brooding, Slint-nodding 2011 breakthrough, ‘Attack on Memory’, ‘Here and Nowhere Else’ brings things back to the band’s frayed, lo-fi essence – the sound of the time when Baldi was nothing but a box-bedroom solo artist with a truckload of pent-up problems, a cracked copy of GarageBand and a dream. Like their debut album ‘Turning On’, ‘Here and Nowhere Else’ is a litany of middle-American, outcast-teen neuroses set to a hardcore guitar churn, diuretic bass lines and Ritalin-addled drum fills
