For all their differences, a Wavves/Cloud Nothings collaboration makes a good deal of sense, and fans have been eagerly anticipating an album since it was officially announced back in March (and word had been circulating a year before that). No Life for Me is deeply indebted to early 1980s Southern California punk, a scene that’s probably buried deep in the soil of Williams’ mind by this point. Traces of the Minutemen surface in the pinch harmonics in Come Down and the dissonant bridge in Hard to Find, and Black Flag’s influence is apparent in the duo’s get in, get out, and cause as much damage as you can approach to songwriting.

In the end, "Wavves X Cloud Nothings" manages to be misleading on numerous levels. It implies a full partnership or at least participation from both bands-this is essentially "Wavves feat. Dylan Baldi", as it calls on Nathan's brother Joel as a producer and his drummer Brian Hill, who is not Jayson Gerycz. Which is to say that Wavves X Cloud Nothings didn't need to result in a good album to justify its existence, but No Life For Me did. Back to home.

At first, the pairing doesn’t make much sense: Wavves' bratty surf punk and Cloud Nothings’ searingly earnest indie rock? And yet, here it is, an album that manages to combine the particular strengths of each band in a way that ends up making a curious kind of sense. Some of the tracks here stake out common ground ( Nervous ); others work through salty yet sweet juxtaposition ( Come Down ). But the brightest highlight is also the album’s biggest departure: the pretty, drumless, album-closing Nothing Hurts. No Life for Me Wavves.
