The first of these, ‘10’, was itself a reworking of materials from an earlier project by Fell and Terre Thaemlitz, released on Comatonse Recordings in 2012.

Fell's been more prolific under his own name than as a member of SND; Sentielle Objectif Actualité is a revision of three 12"s he released this year as Sensate Focus, one of which was already a re-working of a house thumper he recorded with Terre Thaemlitz. the derivative is a measure of how a function changes as its input changes. You get the idea: Sentielle is heady stuff. Like previous albums UL8 and especially the fantastic Multistability, it's a parched, bone-pale collection of rhythms and counter-rhythms. What's frightening isn't that it's more extreme than its predecessors; it's that Sentielle apparently represents Fell's vision of trance-like, highly emotive dance music.

At their best, the tracks on this album dodge nimbly around singular moments of gratification in favour of diffuse, asymmetrical patterns that tumble ceaselessly beyond your grasp-an experience which, much like sex with no climax, certainly has the capacity to frustrate, but also perhaps to reveal another, subtler kind of pleasure.

In accord with his prior work deconstructing garage and techno rhythms as one half of SND, ‘Sentielle Objectif Actualité’ sees Fell tinkering with the rhythmic structure of his more meticulous house-influenced work as Sensate Focus.

If Sentielle Objectif Actualité does anything, it skitters as much as it shimmies; without explicitly going down either a microhouse or a glitch path, it manages a kind of transformative collage on songs like "SOA-3. If there's something closer to a calmer formalism it might be "SOA-6," which almost could be early Orbital at points in its deceptive simplicity of an arrangement, though something about the smeared short tones as they emerge digs a little deeper.

It sounds as though he's disassembled classic club tracks, lost a few pieces, and screwed them back together at odd angles. The chattering drum machines and pastel chords are borrowed from deep house and techno, but his rhythms don't line up in conventional ways, falling instead into 7/4 cadences and even more impossible-to-parse polyrhythms.
